- Cartridge: shut down, relieve pressure at the air valve, open the tank, hose the pleats top-down until clean. Inspect for crushed pleats, tears, or bands failing — a damaged cartridge bypasses debris no matter how clean it looks. One counterintuitive fundamental: a slightly dirty filter often filters better than a spotless one, but a very dirty filter chokes flow, strains the pump, and lets water quality slide. Heaters, cloudy water, and the "it's not the equipment" cases
Heater won't fire. Modern heaters are self-protective: most refuse to ignite when water flow is too low. So before blaming the heater, verify flow — clean the filter, check baskets. If flow is good, check the obvious: gas valve on, pilot/ignition status, error code in the manual. Weak jets but pump sounds fine. Usually a dirty filter (gauge high) or a partially closed valve someone bumped. Walk the plumbing and look at every valve handle before assuming a mystery.
